OUR VISION: EVI-NY envisions a state in which every child has equitable opportunity for a high-quality education, and where New Yorkers call upon their local, state, and federal officials to support that vision. In essence, our vision is to ensure that every child has access to:
- Highly effective teachers
- Early childhood education
- College preparatory curriculum that is well-rounded and includes art, music and athletics
- Affordable higher education
- Equitably distributed public funding.
OUR MISSION: Education Voters Institute – New York is the first state affiliate of the national Education Voters Institute 501(c)(3) organization, headquartered in Washington DC. EVI is building a national network of state organizations to build effective and informed citizen participation in education policy debates. Education Voters Institute organizes citizen forums, tests public opinion, promotes the voice of the citizens in the public debate, and provides this research and training to grassroots leaders, allied organizations, and state coalitions committed to ensuring that all children have access to an excellent education.
EVI-NY works closely with other organizations to transform their good work into systemic change. Public officials make better decisions when they hear from their constituents, so EVI-NY identifies, informs, and motivates people who care about education to raise their civic voices in support of policies that ensure educational opportunity and equity for all children in New York.
EVI works with its sister organizations (Education Voters, a 501(c)(4); and NY EdPAC, a NY State political action committee) to mobilize opportunities for citizens and state coalitions to engage in grassroots advocacy campaigns for policies that improve educational equity and outcomes for all children. By organizing sustained citizen engagement in the electoral and policy-making process, Education Voters is building an independent, nonpartisan movement of citizens and community leaders to transform public education over the next 8 to 10 years.
